Frankfurt & Heidelberg Sight-Seeing Tour
We took advantage of having to go to Frankfurt for the girls swim meet and made a long weekend out of it. Frankfurt is a huge financial base for Germany and the main city center is filled with huge skyscrapers, interesting architecture, colorful adult shops (yup they are here too...) and a large scenic river, the Main. Deutsche Bank has twin towers nicknamed, Debit & Credit, we found that amusing.
We took the train into downtown and arrived at a huge train station, somehow we planned it just right to catch a "Hop On & Hop Off" tour right for the last route of the day. It was a beautiful afternoon with warm sun reflecting on the giant glass fronted buildings. After our quick tour we had some hungry swimmers to feed, we ventured into the Acapulco Cafe. Don't be fooled by the name, it was pure German fare.
Sunday morning we headed south to the historic area of Heidelberg, our drive was pleasant and only about an hour away. This area is lovely. Once again, we managed to arrive on time with an "English" tour starting within a short time. Our extensive tour took us through the unusual history of this great building and our guide was a real hoot.
Visiting the castle and Heidelberg area was a huge highlight for our weekend. The 17th century castle ruins are made of red sandstone and overlooks the Neckar River. It is both breathtaking to look at as well as breathtaking to look down into the main city center from up on the hillside. We took the Funicular to ride down into town and enjoy a delicious lunch before we headed on the autobahn back to Dresden, a 4 1/2 hour drive. While in town we came across a traditional pastry from the area in a charming little shop. Imagine pie crust dough rolled into a large ball and covered with cinnamon, powdered sugar, chocolate, nuts and various other delicious flavorings. These treats are called Schneeballen. We purchased some for our drive home.
